Conclusion

Research findings thus far suggest that EMDR is an effective psychotherapy, a conclusion in accordance with a number of regulatory bodies such as the American Psychological Association (APA), the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Stress (ISTSS), and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE, 2005) for the British Department of Health. Results in randomised controlled comparison studies overwhelmingly show an effect for EMDR with a trend towards greater efficiency when compared to traditional exposure procedures. However, there is controversy around the role of eye movements or bilaterality, around whether EMDR can be construed as a variant of exposure therapy and around the theoretical basis for EMDR.
