Knowing which co-morbidities affect each group and developing interventions that target specifics groups will enhance survival for all cancer patients. Oncology health care providers must be cognizant of what issues affect each particular racial/ethnic group. A prime example of this is the atypical cancer burden suffered by Asian Americans. As opposed to other racial/ethnic groups, cancer rather than heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Asian Americans.34 Coupled with the fact that this group also has an increased incidence of cancer caused by infectious agents such as cervical cancer and HPV, hepatocellular cancer and hepatitis B infection, interventions targeted to this group should be focused to address these particular causes.
