The anterior branches of the spinal nerves in the thoracic region give rise to intercostal nerves. Those in other regions combine to form complex networks called plexuses.

This system controls visceral activities by regulating the actions of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, and various glands. It oversees heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, body temperature, and other visceral activities that aid in maintaining homeostasis. Portions of the auto-nomic nervous system also respond during times of emotional stress and prepare the body to meet the demands of strenuous physical activity.
