Successfully implementing CBBSs requires that project sponsors and project managers address unique characteristics of CBBS projects, as well as the IT elements commonly included in CBBS. Standard project management and development life cycles form a useful starting point for project planning and project management, and project teams can extend these standard methods to address CBBS-specific issues and project specific requirements.
As the two examples show, project management works. Project managers for time-sensitive projects succeed by combining careful up-front planning with diligent monitoring and controlling during execution. Considering project-specific characteristics, the project managers identified appropriate project life cycles, and they adapted these generic life cycles to meet project-specific needs. The project schedule was certainly one key to success. The examples show critical attention to other project management areas: the requirement for data sharing agreements, recognition of competition for limited resources to complete the project, coordination with IT infrastructure providers outside the project team, coordination with data providers outside the project team, and outreach to smooth transition of the project product into customers' operations.
