Currently, federal and state regulations only set guidelines for total fecal coliform and E. coli levels. Regulations dealing with standard unfiltered surface water monitoring for Cryptosporidium and Giardia species are not currently mandated, although regulations are expected to be set soon. Although areas on higher alert, such as large metropolitan regions or sites hosting major sporting events (e.g., the Olympics), may use advanced molecular methods to perform analysis of select agents, these situations are more of an exception to routine testing.
