some require payment of a subscription fee. Usually, each list has a general topical area, meaning (theoretically) that all posting to the list will relate to that topic. An e-mail list can be moderated (meaning that submissions are reviewed by an editor prior to posting) or unmoderated.

ProMED-mail (discussed in detail above) is a moderated e-mail list whose topic is threats to the public's health. If a ProMED-mail subscriber such as a public health physician or a veterinarian wishes to be notified immediately of information about animal, zoonotic, or vector-borne disease outbreaks, she would subscribe to the ProMED-ahead list, which forwards e-mail on those topics as soon as an e-mail is posted to the list. There is also ProMED-ahead-digest, which sends a summary e-mail daily containing all the day's postings. E-mail lists typically provide an online archive of all past postings to the list, which a subscriber can search for specific topics or words.
