Incremental Updating

When we apply this technique to a population of millions of people, calculating P(e I I) will be a time-consuming task, even with the savings that results from using equivalence classes. Since we would like to perform this calculation very frequently (e.g., every hour as ED patients are coming into EDs throughout the modeled region), it is important to avoid re-calculating P(e 11) for the entire population every hour. To do so, we use the fact that as a single person moves from one equivalence class Qj to another Q k, P(e 11) can be updated to P(e'I I) as follows:
