Mail Lists

An e-mail list is mechanism to distribute an e-mail to a set of people who have indicated an interest in receiving e-mails from this source. An organization sets up an e-mail list by installing software (e.g., LISTSERV® or Majordomo) on its own hardware or by contracting with another organization to install and maintain the software and hardware.

Individuals then may subscribe to the list, which usually means providing at a minimum their e-mail addresses and usually some preferences about the types of e-mails they wish to receive and the periodicity. A subscriber can elect to receive e-mails on an immediate message-by-message basis or in a daily/weekly digest format. Most e-mail lists are free, but
