Project SHARE illustrates a successful school health monitoring system that combines both absenteeism data and nurse reporting of student symptoms. This combination provides a relatively complete picture of student health. Absenteeism alone was not an adequate data source, but provided a foundation, which when combined with reports from school nurses provided a highly valued source of information about the health of the school populations. Obstacles, such as a lack of interoperability among attendance systems and the lack of information technology, were overcome by use of web and telephone reporting systems.
