Because of the huge volume of water issuing from our reservoirs, the presence of a biological microorganism in source water does not guarantee it will also appear in a sample. Hence, utilities filter samples to increase the concentration of captured pathogens. Even this is not always sufficient to ensure detection, because the total volume of water that can realistically route through such filters is limited. Thus, the utility will use both filtration and advanced molecular methods to further increase the likelihood of detecting an organism in a sample.
