Optimal opportunities for prevention

Primary prevention par excellence can be practised in general practice under the opportunities provided by the following clinical circumstances:

• antenatal care

• postnatal care

• advising people travelling overseas

• visits by infants with their parents

• times of crisis or potential crisis

• the premarital check-up

The Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) has identified the seven most important opportunities for prevention as:

1. family planning

2. antenatal care

3. immunisation

4. fostering the bonds between mother and child

5. discouragement of smoking

6. detection and management of raised BP

7. helping the bereaved
